What is a 'greater committee?'

"Greater" refers to an inclusive geographic area and a long-term view of the civic issues which affect the area in making it a better place in which to live and work. Most greater committees are currently in Maryland and Wisconsin.

The Greater Salisbury Committee was started in 1967, following consultation among our community leaders and the leaders of the Greater Baltimore Committee which was started in 1953. Membership is by individual and members must have a proven record of civic and community leadership as well as holding a senior-level business management position.

GSC helped form the Greater Dover Committee and the Greater Wilmington Committee in 1981, the Greater Hagerstown Committee in 1987, and the Greater Cumberland Committee in 1999. To visit them, click on the following links:

Our mission . . .

GSC is a group of business and professional leaders whose purposes are (a) to help identify the problems of the community, (b) to help find broad and sound solutions for such problems, and (c) to assist in the resolution of these problems to the end that the community is a vital and progressive center that will provide the best possible quality of life for its citizens to these ends. The committee seeks to cooperate with and assist government authorities and private organizations.

GSC's concentration is on creating long-term solutions for major issues in the Mid-Delmarva area.

The Greater Salisbury Committee is organized as a not-for-profit civic organization, 501(c)(4), and today covers Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties in Maryland; Sussex County in Delaware; and Accomack and Northampton counties in Eastern Shore Virginia.
