"GSC has played a significant and important role in supporting economic development, transportation and education initiatives that improve the quality of life and economic opportunity for all the residents of the Delmarva Peninsula. GSC has supported the Spaceport from the beginning. You are a much valued advisor, partner and leader for MARS/VCSFA."

Billie M. Reed, Ph.D
Director, Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport

GSC Vision For Area

GSC is dedicated to helping make the Mid-Delmarva Peninsula an optimal place to live and to work. Toward the end, we want to help:

  • Develop a cooperative attitude and a personal ownership in our community among the residents and organizations of the area.
  • Encourage the monitoring of the quality of basic areas of our regional community including education, the economy, housing, crime, and health, among others, as well as 10-year projections of anticipated needs.
  • Develop forward-looking planning on a regional basis to see the “big-picture” and to encourage cooperation among the many units of government, the not-for-profits, and the private sector.
  • Encourage research and planning in the areas of present and future workforce needs as well as the planning to provide for those needs.
  • Develop cooperation and open governments in the region in an effort to encourage citizen involvement and to attain peak efficiency.
  • Encourage area civic and governmental leaders to create an optimal future rather than simply providing for meeting of perceived future trends.

GSC 2009-2010 Work Program

  1. Growth and support for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) - Explore regional approaches to MARS such as (a) in solidifying local, regional, and state support from the Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware areas, (b) by establishing a brand name of the Mid-Atlantic Space Coast through tourism professionals in the area rom Sussex Couty to Virginia Beach, and (c) integrating MARS into the local educational systems by bringing them together in STEM education.
  2. Core community development. Initiate action by stakeholders to regenerate the urban core to encourage development, promote community safety and encourage harmony with neighborhoods and neighbors, recognizing the main keys to this community such as PRMC, Salisbury University, the Public Library and neighborhoods such as Camden, New Town and others.
  3. Community safety - Coalesce with other community and government groups and involve the public in safety resources in cities and towns in the region. Create links to public safety efforts and create a proposal to provide the most cost-effective approaches to public safety including a "Take Back Our Community effort.
  4. Wicomico County Comprehensive Plan - Monitor the development of the plan, assess draft sections of the plan, keep the Executive Committee informed of the key elements and/or changes, and provide recommendations and suggestions to the Executive Committee on positions for possible submission to the appropriate county group.
